The Grammy Awards were on television the other night and the Internet was abuzz the next day with pics and stories about winners, clothing, songs, speeches, and other bits and pieces that make up an event at which thousands of people in the music industry reward each other for work well done.
Some of the chatter revolved around 23-year-old musician Taylor Swift and her opening performance of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” At about 2:10 into her performance, she has a spoken bridge where, in the Grammy version, she adopts a British accent.

The word on the so called street aka Internet is that Swift was mocking 19-year-old Harry Styles, a singer with the British band One Direction. Apparently, the singers had gone on a few dates.
This opened the flood gates of Swift Bashing.
People went to Youtube and Yahoo! pages to leave comments about the performance and the possibility that Swift was flipping the musical bird to a former suitor. The majority of folks chastised Swift.
“I used to really like Taylor Swift, but she’s gotten so catty and pathetic. As she gets older, the more immature she gets. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be the other way around,” says Heidi on Yahoo! Others assumed that Swift must be a nasty person or maybe just ends up dating the wrong type of guy.
I agree with Angela on Yahoo! “Is anyone else just sick and tired of hearing about her dumb #$%$ breakups?” Even I am weary about hearing about Swift’s dates but not because I judge her for dating. I could absolutely care less that she’s dating a lot.
But as an observer of relationships and student of communication studies, I find the debate over her love life to be fascinating.
Why are they attacking Swift with such anger?
Perhaps people are envious. Who wouldn’t love to be surrounded by backup singers, imaginative props, and sing to millions of people about the ex, the boss, the neighbor, or the sibling who you think “did you wrong?” Come on, it’s a fantasy we all have to publically say “you suck.”
The ONLY difference between me and you and Swift is that she gets to date other entertainers, write songs about them, and then wear costumes in front of people when she sings about it. We only have our living rooms or cars as our venues.
Natalie Conners on Youtube summarizes the whole thing for me.
You guys have a skewed perception of what dating is. Dating is when you spend time with more than one person to see who’s right for you. You guys act like she married and divorced all these guys. It’s called dating for a reason. And just so you know, she’s allowed to break up with people and be upset and call names. The rest of you calling her immature have done the same thing.
So keep singing, Taylor Swift. If you’re still humming the same tune about the same types of relationships at age 43, then we’ll talk. Until then, be strong and have fun!
