I received a Facebook message from a new Sip and Go Girl reader. Chris says,
“…I just want to tell you how much I am enjoying “Sip and Go Girl”!!! I look every day for the new writings! I love them all… ! I remember when I first told my mom that I was dating a guy 20 years older than me!! Her reply, “Well, you were born 40 so you’re actually 20 years older than him”!!!!! I LOVED that!!!! As rare as it was, her sense of humor did surface once in awhile!!!”
This is great stuff because I was inspired to remember some of what my mother Ann 
(seen holding me in the photo to the left) has said about the fellas I dated or married. She would say very little and I mostly remember her facial expressions when I would mention certain guys. Now, I live a distance from her and our conversations are on the phone or via email. I have to guess by her silence what she is saying.
But I don’t recall any advice she gave me about dating or marriage.
What kind of advice does or did your parents give you about your relationships?
And Mom if you’re reading this, what did you tell me?
It does not surprise me that your mom didn’t really give you any advice about dating or marriage and perhaps to this day still doesn’t. I am the same way with my son Andy, who is 29. I do not think young adults want relationship advice from their parents! The only time I felt “safe” commenting on a girlfriend my son had was when she was “long gone”!! Tell me “Does Mother Always Know Best” author, would you really even want any relationship advice from your parents? Would anyone?????
I generally ignore any advice my mom gives me regarding dating. This is after I remind her that she has not been single for almost 50 years now. More than our clothing and haircuts have changed.

The reason parents don’t give their children relationship advice is because you wouldn’t listen to us anyway. My own mother said to me the one way to determine whether or not the guy is someone you want to spend the rest of your life with, is knowing you’ll be washing his dirty underwear. I did give advice once and it didn’t do any good. She she still ran off and married him.
