When the “I” Becomes “We”

I’ve never been married. I’ve never really been close to getting married, but these days I’m dating a man who just might be my future husband.

Most of my adult life I thought about what it would be like to make that commitment, although I must admit a lot of those thoughts focused on wedding dresses, a ring, reception colors, bridesmaids. I thought about, you know, the fun wedding stuff.

Now that I’m older, I realize there’s a lot more to getting married than that one special day. Even now as he and I progress in our relationship, the I’s are slowly becoming We’s.

The Sun Will Rise

A line from one of my favorite Kelly Clarkson songs seems especially relevant lately. It’s from her song “The Sun Will Rise,” on her Stronger album.

“… Somehow my clouds disappeared, somehow I made it here, maybe just so you could hear me say the sun will rise.”

I’ve seen my fair share of heartbreak. Around this time last year I was in a totally different space still devastated from my latest breakup and disappointment from a person I’d spent years loving and giving my whole heart to. It took me a while to climb out of that coma, but I’m happy to say it’s the best thing that ever happened to me.

Dropping The L Bomb

Whitney Houston sang about the question many of us ask ourselves in relationships, “How will I know if he really loves me?”

You’ve probably dropped an “L” bomb or two in your lifetime, especially if you’re like me.

I’ve never said it without meaning it, but now that I’m older I realize at least one of those statements was more of a “I don’t want to be without you I can see myself falling in love with you down the road so I’ll say it back to avoid being awkward.”

Waiting For The Other Shoe To Drop

There’s a scene in the “Sex and The City” movie that I’ve been thinking about recently.

Charlotte and Carrie are furniture shopping. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the movie, at this point Charlotte is pregnant after a long battle with infertility, Carrie has been stood up at the altar, and Miranda’s husband Steve slept with another woman.

Charlotte says, “Nobody gets everything they want! Look at you, look at Miranda. You’re good people and you two both got shafted. I’m so happy and… something bad is going to happen.” Carrie responds with, “Sweetie, you shit your pants this year. Maybe you’re done.”

Who Do You Love?

By: On the DL

As a mass communication and English writing major, I’ve always found it interesting how one word can have multiple meanings. We all have a pretty good idea of what the word “love” means. If you don’t know the definition, Merriam-Webster online can show you at least nine of them! It’s a word that not only carries different meanings but also varying degrees of emotion.

Looking for love….

Being Brave

I often look to music and song lyrics for inspiration, an emotional release, meditation, and hope. I love a really good song that stops you in your tracks, makes you think, and leads you to the iTunes store for an immediate download!

It has been a rough couple of weeks at work and in my personal life, so I was feeling pretty defeated during my morning commute the other day. I try to tune into my “Inspiration” playlist while making the 20-minute drive as a way to refocus and prepare for the 8, 9, sometimes 13-hour day ahead.

That’s what I was doing when I heard Josh Groban’s “Brave” blasting through my car speakers. I’m not a huge Groban fan, but the orchestra-style rock and moving lyrics made me feel like he’d written the song just for me.

It’s about looking what you fear most in the face, and embracing it. It’s about strength, independence, faith, and courage. It’s about understanding the things you can’t control and making the best of what you have in front of you. At least that’s what I take away from it.

Seeking Closure

Closure. It’s something many of us seek after a relationship has ended. But not all of us find it.

Until a few days ago, I thought I was one of the lucky few who has slowly but surely tied up the loose ends of my past and moved forward. Again, that was up until a few days ago. That’s when my college boyfriend starting following me on Twitter.

Sounds harmless because we broke up five years ago. But the move is significant when you know his now-fiancee’ banned him from contact with me about two years ago and we ended our rocky five-year college relationship on not-so-great terms.

Don’t Overthink It

It’s a simple enough idea, but for many of us not “overthinking it” can be nearly impossible at times. Whether it centers around a relationship, work, finances, a looming life decisions, all of us are probably guilty of thinking too much at one point or another.

My inspiration for this article came during a 6.2 mile training run. My half marathon is just a few weeks away and I’m hell bent on breaking 2:30 this time around. It’s my third time tackling 13.1 miles and I really want to start the new year with a strong personal record.

Blinded By Love

Have you ever noticed that when you start to really like someone–maybe even start to love them– they become more attractive?

At first you probably think he or she is cute with a pleasant demeanor and a few similar interests. Give it a few more months and suddenly your new partner is a physical specimen of perfection, with the “perfect” personality and hobbies that have now become your hobbies too.

It’s not unusual for people to idealize their significant others, and they often don’t realize they’re doing it until that relationship is finished.

I Want To Be The Best He’s Ever Had

I’m an ambitious person.

I’m ahead of the game compared to a lot of other people my age when it comes to my education and career. I credit that to my inner drive. Sure there are days when I feel lazy and a bit unmotivated, but overall if I’m going to do something, I give it my all. I like to be the best.
