Tales From Sip And Go Girl: “John”

John was never a sip and go because John was never a date. I turned down his invitation to a school dance when I was 15-years-old.

My high school had a semi-formal school dance called Casaba. It is not named after the melon. It’s a blend of the words “Casa” and “basketball.” “Casa” was part of my high school’s name.

The event is essentially the school’s basketball homecoming and happens every January. The week’s festivities include basketball games and decorating four hallways for each class– freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior.

My sophomore year, I hadn’t thought much about attending the dance. I was more concerned with my work on the yearbook staff and how I could get on the staff of the community newspaper.

Just A Warning: Jealous People Might Contact You

My ex-boyfriend John has friended and unfriended me many times on Facebook. Thus, I wasn’t shocked when he unfriended me again recently. I just rolled my eyes and shook my head.

Then I received a personal message from him:

[Unfriending you] was for your own protection. Seriously. The woman. She began to show a very mean, possessive and jealous streak and has begun contacting FB friends. You and about six other females were deleted. Nothing personal. All passwords have been changed just in case. So fed up with dating.

One might find this terribly dramatic and shocking except this is not the first time I have been warned by a man about the possibility of a woman contacting me.

Who's calling? A jealous person.

The Black Sheep

My first ballot for U.S. President was cast in 1992. I was excited to enter the polling place for the first time. That particular political season and race was electric and dynamic too.

The 1992 election was also when I emerged as the family member with a different political and sometimes religious leaning than the rest of my relatives.

With that revelation, I further cemented my black sheep status.

A black sheep. Standing out from the rest. No "maybe" with that

Time Machine

Oh how people wish they could go back in time or forward in time……

In the early 1990s, I bought a computer game for my father John for some occasion like a birthday, Father’s Day, or the holidays. The game ran on our MS-DOS system computer and bore the name Timequest.

The plot begins in the year 2090. A bad guy has stolen a time machine and traveled into the past. He’s altering historical events to make the outcomes of these events change. The game player is charged with taking another time machine and stopping and reversing the heinous doings of the bad guy. If the bad guy isn’t stopped, the world will fall apart.

Timequest was hard to play. My father and I had to order the secret manual from the creator in order to manuever our ways through six geographical locations in nine different time periods. The secret involved gathering items or doing just the right thing in order to stop the altered timelines.

We seemed to often get stuck dealing with the death of Julius Caesar in Rome of 44 BC.

Tales From Sip And Go Girl: “John”

My friend, coworker, and former room mate Bill called John a creeper.

The slang emerged in the mid 1990s and meant someone who slinks around peeping at another person. Usually, a creeper in this context has romantic designs on whoever he or she is watching. While a creeper has the potential to become a scary stalker perhaps, generally a creeper is merely someone who’s socially inexperienced or fiercely shy and afraid to talk or move forward with the object of his or her affection.

There’s also the creeper who does things on the down low aka in secret. The pop group TLC tackled the topic in the Grammy-winning song “Creep.” The song, coincidentally, was released around the same time that this aforementioned John was creeping.

John did indeed pop up at the most unusual of times. He appeared at the restaurant where he, Bill, and I worked but on days other than his designated shift. He would loiter a little longer than necessary at whatever part of the restaurant I was working.
