I blame my friend Connie’s romanticism for my one and only blind date. She set me up with Randy, the sip and go who spent the entire night ignoring me.

Connie and I met while working at a restaurant. She had been married about one year and was a couple years younger than me.

Connie married Kevin while a senior in high school. After the wedding day at the county courthouse, they moved into her bedroom at her parents’ home. She poured over bridal magazines, planning a glamorous wedding for when she and Kevin had money to spend.

Losing My Identity

I don’t lose things. I don’t leave my cell phone on store counters, I don’t misplace my keys, and I certainly don’t lose my driver license. But now it seemed to have happened.

It was annoying but eventually led to a glorious realization.

Fulltime traditional jobs weren’t coming to fruition, a vandal drizzled chocolate syrup on the windshield of my car, my cat Saffron found a little brown bat on the balcony and brought it into my bed as a plaything. Several rabies shots and mandatory emergency room visits later, I was looking at debt for the first time in my life because also for the first time in my life I lacked health insurance.

You’re Acting CRAZY

We’ve all been in a stituation when we react in a dramatic way that’s out of character a little for us.

Last year, I was packed and ready to go for a long weekend of scuba diving in Mexico. My friend Randy–who’s also a diver– was picking me up at my place at O’Dark Thirty to drive me to the scuba diving store. That’s where we would meet with the rest of the divers caravaning during the drive to the Sea of Cortez.

I had placed my iPod on my little tabletop stereo to charge overnight.

Although I don’t use the MP3 player often, I absolutely love and adore it for the boat rides out to the island. I watch the just-risen sun kiss the tips of the cliffs around the marina. The birds skim the surface of the ocean as the crew churns the Newton ’48 through the water. The air is clear and fresh. I take all this in while being lost in my music. It’s a religious experience that allows me the chance to meditate over where I’ve been, where I am, and where I am going.
