Tales From Sip And Go Girl: “Kurt”

I’ve talked about Kurt before. He was mentioned in a December 2012 article called Phantom Lover From The Past.

He and I met at a university campus ATM. He recognized the monstrous law book I was carrying as the same one he used in a criminal justice class. Kurt was taking the same class but on a different day.

Our conversation led to an exchange of phone numbers. He called me. That Friday night, I met him at his house. We were going to drive together from there to see the new Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves movie. It starred Kevin Costner and had been super popular so far at the theater.

Kurt answered the door wearing denim overalls. They weren’t the full length ones. They were the shorts. He wore them over a tshirt and left one side unbuckled so it dangled around his waist.

My Internet search for pics of men in denim overalls always yields this photo of New Kids on the Block

He gave me a quick tour of the house he shared with at least one room mate.

“This is my room.”

All I remember is the framed 8 1/2 x 11 pic of a woman. It sat on the nightstand.

“Who’s that?” I asked. Yes, the journalist and relationship-obsesser was at work even before graduating from college.

“That’s my girlfriend. Well, my ex. We broke up a while ago.”

We went to the movie and other than the huge photo he had, I have maybe two other memories of the night.

I recall staring at the unbuckled side of his denim overalls while we stood line to get into the actual theater room to see the movie. I was thinking it was such a trendy thing to do. Women wore them like that too, although I never owned a pair of overalls. I recognize fashion trends but only sometimes follow them.

I also remember his reaction to the film.

Part of the plot involves the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Alan Rickman who I now ironically love as an actor, marrying the unwilling Maid Marian. The Sheriff is trying desperately to consummate the marriage with a struggling Maid Marian as Robin Hood and the band of merry men are storming the castle.

During the scene shown above, Kurt was laughing uncontrollably and hysterically. He had tears in his eyes and he was guffawing.

I didn’t seek out Kurt again. He didn’t call me either. Maybe he didn’t like my lack of overalls and laughter during the attack on Maid Marian.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves earned nearly $400 million at the global box office, making it the second highest grossing film of 1991. It was a box office hit.

My chemistry with Kurt? Not a hit.
