As a mass communication and English writing major, I’ve always found it interesting how one word can have multiple meanings. We all have a pretty good idea of what the word “love” means. If you don’t know the definition, Merriam-Webster online can show you at least nine of them! It’s a word that not only carries different meanings but also varying degrees of emotion.
For example, you might be shopping at the mall and say, “I love that sweater!” You sign greeting cards, “love, so-and-so,” you probably tell your parents and siblings you love them. You say it to your significant other and your best friends. You get the point.
It’s easy to toss the word around in everyday conversation. But if you had to really think about it, who do you really love?
I’m not talking about superficial, materialistic, or sexual desire kind of love. I’m talking about that unselfish, genuine, whole-hearted kind of love? Is it your family? Is it your partner? Is it your best friend? Your child? Your pet?
There is no correct answer. Different people will have different answers. I’m just posing the question as a way to take stock of what, and who, matters most in my life.
